Civil Rights History: Martin Luther King & Abraham Joshua Heschel

Abraham Joshua Heschel may be the most influential Jewish thinker of the twentieth century. His writings, activism, and thought influenced contemporary Judaism into the 21st Century. The Civil Rights Movement has become an essential pillar of collective Jewish memory after the Holocaust and the State of Israel. Today, Judaism fondly looks back at the era when the Church invited Jews to partner with them as equals and advocate for the disenfranchised. No longer would Jews stand on the side and watch injustice have its way. This four-part series will explore the life and contribution of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel and his involvement in America’s Civil Rights Movement, which began a new chapter in American Jewry. Moreover, the course will explore how Heschel and this momentous event transformed contemporary Judaism and Jewish thinking today.
